Yes, you can buy them by the dozen, and they’re what you want to eat here, but I strongly advise you limit your intake. You will not find a meal of doughboys and chowder beyond New England’s southern shores. But you will find doughboy cognates throughout the east and even way out west. In Rhode Island, the term doughboy describes a small square of puffy fried dough, served hot and usually rolled in sugar. Sold by the dozen, they make especially good sweet-bread companions for seafood. In this Warwick boardwalk restaurant with a charming waterside view, you can order doughboys by the dozen. Choose whether you want them sprinkled with granulated sugar, cinnamon, or powdered sugar.

House grows suspicious when he learns that the painter was fearful of a test involving the injection of a dye. It is later revealed that he is on three separate drug trials, which he was hiding from his girlfriend. Meanwhile, House continues to use Lucas to obtain information about his team and to learn more about Cuddy's personal life. Unable to cope, Wilson resigns from the hospital, while Cuddy desperately tries to get him and House to repair their shattered friendship.

The cast and crew all have their own ideas, too, and they laid them out to GQ. And it's not just that House drew some of its themes and references from Sherlock Holmes. Den of Geek points out that it may have contributed to Holmes' own legacy, too. As Lin-Manuel Miranda told GQ, House helped "spawn a cottage industry of TV imitators — 'troubled genius, but, man, is he/she good at the job.' Throw a rock and you'll hit 50 procedurals like that now." And what show quickly popped up to follow that same pattern? We think that's more than enough to make House an honorary part of the Holmes family tree. House attracted plenty of high-profile guest stars — including Jeremy Renner and LL Cool J — but for sheer pop culture foreshadowing, it's hard to top Lin-Manuel Miranda's appearances in season six.

Why House Went To Jail In Season 8 & How He Got Out.
Dr. Lisa Cuddy was the hospital's administrator and House's love interest in their uniquely tumultuous relationship, making her central to the show's workplace plots and its personal arcs. Shore decided to use Penn's character's exit to make a point about mental health and to throw a wrench into the show's works. Kutner unexpectedly commits suicide, leaving the other characters grief-stricken and — almost more importantly — confused. Shore explained, "[House] prides himself on having answers for everything and being able to figure out everybody. And yet a person he had worked with for almost two years does something and House is baffled by it." It was a shocking choice, but one with a ton of dramatic potential. But while the show has become a part of television history, it's far from a dusty relic.
Cast and characters
House and the team plan to get the man into the hospital for surgery without causing any problems. Meanwhile, Cameron and Chase attempt to work through issues in their relationship, and House deals with an annoying itch he cannot seem to scratch, with Wilson making his own analogies about the problem. House is coerced into going to his father's funeral despite his protests. His team takes on the case of a young woman (Samantha Quan) who collapsed while in China searching for her birth parents. House works with the team via cell phone, while Wilson drives him—reluctantly—to the funeral. House's phone is taken by a cop mid-diagnosis and the team must decipher House's last statement.
House season 5
The upheaval at the end of House's third season — which saw the original team of Foreman, Cameron, and Chase coming to an end — can still shock viewers. It's rare for a successful show to wipe out its own winning formula and start over. The producers waded through a lot of audition videos looking for someone who felt right. House and the team take on the case of Nick Greenwald (Jay Karnes), a book editor who loses his inhibitions and starts insulting co-workers at a dinner party one night before falling ill. The team realizes Nick has frontal lobe disinhibition, which has caused him to lose his filter and vocalize all of his innermost thoughts, resulting in extremely insulting outbursts. As Nick's free speech leads to some amusing and insightful comments regarding the team, he must deal with the consequences of being unable to lie to his wife and everyone else important in his life.

The series' executive producers included Shore, Attanasio, Attanasio's business partner Katie Jacobs, and film director Bryan Singer. It was filmed largely in a neighborhood and business district in Los Angeles County's Westside called Century City. It received high critical acclaim, and was consistently one of the highest-rated series in the United States.

It gathered up a variety of awards and nominations, collecting accolades for everything from its sharp writing to its memorable performances. In 2008, it was the top show globally, earning it a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records (Hugh Laurie has the relevant page hanging on the wall of his study). It helped reshape the TV landscape, influenced countless other shows, and reinvented lead actor Hugh Laurie's career. Entertainment Weekly dubbed it one of the top 100 "new classics" of TV, and the Writers Guild of America put it in their list of the 101 Best Written TV Series.

And it was a chance for non-Broadway audiences to get a look at some of his talents. A later interview with GQ reveals just how much his turn on the show meant to him. "I wrote this secret rap after I finished my episode on the occasion of Hugh's Emmy nomination, a 'thank you' for having me along for a small part of the ride," he recalled.
But Penn got a chance to work for President Obama's administration, and creator David Shore was willing to bend any planned plotlines to give him that opportunity. Shore told TV Guide, "If he came to me saying, I've been offered an arc on another TV show, I might have said no. But he wanted to do something with his life and I'm not going to stand in his way. I was proud of him for doing that." Years of terrific comedic performances in England had made Hugh Laurie's reputation.
Wilson finds that Danny is now a stranger to him and that the initial incident that led to his disappearance has shaped his behavior in ways only House seems to fully comprehend. Staff at Princeton-Plainsboro, particularly House and the team, try to deal with Kutner's recent suicide while Cameron presents House with the case of an environmentalist (Tim Rock) who collapsed in the middle of a protest. Meanwhile, Cameron cancels a trip that Chase had planned for them and spends the next few days avoiding him for a surprising reason.
No longer a world where an idealized doctor has all the answers or a hospital where gurneys race down the hallways, House's focus is on the pharmacological—and the intellectual demands of being a doctor. The trial-and-error of new medicine skillfully expands the show beyond the format of a classic procedural, and at the show's heart, a brilliant but flawed physician is doling out the prescriptions—a fitting symbol for modern medicine. Wilson takes House out to dinner and buys him a drink, and after House drinks it, he walks off indignant that Wilson would suspect that he is taking heroin.
Foreman must make a potentially dangerous decision about Thirteen's participation in his drug trial. The team take on the case of a middle-aged man (Salvator Xuereb) who has been experiencing recurring blackouts, time lapses and sleepwalking. They soon find out that the man's 12-year-old daughter (Joanna Koulis) has also been experiencing sleepwalking spells. The man's condition deteriorates and his daughter also begins to experience more symptoms. Meanwhile, House finds out Cuddy is going to adopt a baby that is due in two weeks.
His only true friend is Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), head of the Department of Oncology. Each U.S. network television season starts in September and ends in late May, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps. However, the biggest change in Season 5 was the departure of Kal Penn from the series so he could take a position at the White House. As a result of his sudden departure, his character, Lawrence Kutner was killed off. For eight seasons, House was one of the most popular shows on television.
Episode list
We knew the network was looking for procedurals, and Paul [Attanasio] came up with this medical idea that was like a cop procedural. Five seasons in, Hugh Laurie continues to find new emotional wrinkles to the complicated character that is Doctor House. House eventually believes he has confessed the hallucinations to Cuddy and that she helped him through the painful withdrawal process. After House dries out, he starts to kiss in her and it was implied that they made love afterwards. The encounter, however, was eventually revealed to be an elaborate hallucination and delusion. The entire team is shocked and confused when Kutner commits suicide and the whole team is saddened by his loss.
Lisa Edelstein made a clean break
They chose a gender for him when he was born and raised him accordingly. However, when his condition worsens and his life is threatened, the parents wonder whether they made the right decision. Meanwhile, Cuddy and Wilson suspect something is wrong with House when he starts acting way too nice.
Everything New on Prime Video in April
He told Playbill, "When they said they wrote the part with me in mind, they weren't kidding. I play House's roommate in the psych ward, and the best way of putting it is I play Tigger to his Eeyore." When his episodes aired in 2009, Miranda had already created the award-winning musical In the Heights, but his biggest breakout hit — Founding Father rap musical Hamilton — was still ahead of him. He'd debuted a short concept version at the White House only a few months before. The show didn't waste that drama — Kutner becomes a symbol of everything haunting House. Without his suicide in season five, the show might never have moved on to House in a psychiatric facility in season six.

These visions are extremely vivid and allow House a direct line to his own sub-conscious. However, House is soon carrying out actual conversations with Amber to the point where he uses a Bluetooth Headset while at the Hospital so it does not appear he's talking to himself. After subjecting himself to a number of dangerous treatments, the hallucinations are eventually shown to be an obvious and common result of Vicodin abuse. However, Wilson has to come to terms with another loss - his homeless brother Danny reappears in his life when he is found in New York City.
When a priest (Jimmi Simpson) who runs a homeless shelter sees a bleeding Jesus hovering at his doorstep, he is admitted to the ER. House takes on the case as a distraction for the team while he confronts Foreman and Thirteen about their relationship. The team soon learns the priest had been involved in a molestation scandal that caused him to lose his faith.

Meanwhile, Taub struggles with his finances and reconnects with an old high school friend at the clinic whose business successes present Taub with an entrepreneurial opportunity he had not previously considered. The team encounters a teenage boy (Dominic Scott Kay) who collapsed from severe pelvic pain after playing basketball. The boy was born with a condition called genetic mosaicism (46, XX/XY), or both male and female DNA, and the boy's parents inform House and the team that the boy is unaware of his condition.

House: The Real Reasons Why Cast Members Left the Show.
Laurie was baffled by the response his character got — "Even my wife Jo doesn't think I'm sexy," he told Hello Magazine — but no one else was. Thirteen has to confront the reality, forced upon her by Amber's death at an early age, that she too is facing a lifetime with a devastating illness. Her behavior quickly starts to deteriorate and she is fired and then re-hired. As a result, Foreman begins first to get concerned about her behavior, then starts to feel protective.
The stripper had used strawberry body butter, and as a result of his strawberry allergy, Chase goes into an anaphylactic shock, and is saved by a medical student with an EpiPen. House realizes that he knew about Karamel's body butter and that the his subconscious was out to get Chase - the Amber hallucination has become dangerous. Feeling overwhelmed by both her hospital responsibilities and the demands of a new child, she accepts Wilson's suggestion that she hand over some of her hospital duties to a deputy. To handle the almost full-time job of supervising House, she turns to Cameron, who is incredibly adept at handling her old boss, but soon realizes she isn't up to the challenge on a constant basis and that anyone else would just say "no" to House all the time. Cuddy returns to cover all her duties and starts to make House's life as miserable as possible for keeping her away from her child, including posting signs on the elevator that it is scheduled for maintenance (which it's not) and setting up a trip wire in the doorway or part of his office.
However, Wilson follows him and finds him puking it up out back by a dumpster, House finally admits he is taking Methadone because it has put an end to the pain in his leg. After threatening to leave if Cuddy won't agree to methadone treatment, he instead goes back to Vicodin because his changed behavior with methadone almost cost a patient his life. A deaf 14-year-old boy, Seth (Ryan Lane), collapses in the middle of a wrestling match after "hearing" explosions. House suffers from lack of sleep, which causes him to hallucinate that Amber is with him, helping him to solve the case. House also plans Chase's bachelor party — much to the dismay of Cameron — with the help of Amber.
House was among the top 10 series in the United States from its second through fourth seasons. Distributed to 71 countries, it was the most-watched TV program in the world in 2008.[3] It received numerous awards, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Peabody Award, and nine People's Choice Awards. On February 8, 2012, Fox announced that the eighth season, then in progress, would be its last.[4] The series finale aired on May 21, 2012, following an hour-long retrospective. House often clashes with his fellow physicians, including his own diagnostic team, because many of his hypotheses about patients' illnesses are based on subtle or controversial insights. His flouting of hospital rules and procedures frequently leads him into conflict with his boss, hospital administrator and Dean of Medicine Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein).

Designed in 1984 for artist Lynn Norton and writer William Norton, Frank Gehry’s Norton House is known for its eccentric form and eclectic materiality. Much like his own house in Santa Monica, the Norton House is a sculptural assemblage of everyday materials. The Nortons had in fact seen Gehry’s house in 1983 and obviously approved of his experiment. So, a year later, they commissioned him to design their house on a narrow, ocean-facing plot of land on Venice Boardwalk. With the commission, Gehry continued his exploration of creating architecture with everyday materials, low costs, and sculptural forms.
Formally, the building is a group of offset boxes connected by interior and exterior staircases, each with a deck area above. The ground floor, which houses two bedrooms, a studio, and a garage, is subtly set back from the street wall. The volume itself is wrapped in bright blue tiles. The second floor, which contains the main living spaces including a kitchen and living space, is set farther back in an effort to maintain privacy. This space opens onto a terrace overlooking the ocean. The third floor, which includes another bedroom and an external staircase to the roof terrace, has its own deck as well.

In March 1954, Clarence “Buck” Stahl and Carlotta May Gates drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got married in a chapel. It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled. Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue.

Most people and even medical doctors over-diagnose “potential spider bite” based on symptoms such as redness, swelling, cramps, severe pain, or even necrotic lesions. These are usually caused by other factors including diseases or medical conditions and bacterial skin infections. Both spiders and insects are arthropods, meaning their skeletons are on the outside of their bodies (exoskeleton). The common name 'Badge Huntsman' comes from the distinctive, often brightly coloured badge or shield on the underside of the abdomen. Black House Spiders are timid animals and bites from them are infrequent.

Wolf spiders are robust, fast and agile hunters that rely on good eyesight to hunt, typically at night. However, it is classed as a harmless indoor brown spider because it’s not aggressive and only bites if you grab or squeeze it. Additionally, the toxins in the venom aren’t dangerous to humans. Female wolf spiders are very maternal and will carry their eggs in a sac on their back. When the eggs hatch, the female will carry the hatchlings on her back until they are large enough to hunt on their own.
Where Do Wolf Spiders Live?
The brown recluse, or “fiddleback,” can have a violin-shaped mark on its cephalothorax (the front part of the body). But brown recluses are more easily distinguished from wolf spiders by the number of eyes. Other names for the brown recluse spider include brown fiddler, violin spider, or fiddleback spider. Although the violin markings on its head are an identifiable feature, other harmless spiders also have similar markings. However, a unique characteristic of the brown spider is that it has six, not eight, eyes like most spiders.
Cellar Spider
Joro spiders are large with brightly colored distinctive yellow, red, and black patterns. They were recently spotted in the southeastern U.S., particularly around homes with gardens. These spiders build large, orb-like webs and are known for their vibrant, colorful appearance. Woodlouse spiders have reddish heads and gray abdomens with robust bodies. They can be found in damp areas under rocks and logs outdoors, in basements, or under floorboards in homes.
True to their name, funnel weavers make funnel-like webs along the ground in which the spider hides in. When a prey species crosses the web and vibrates it, the spider will jump out and grab its new meal. Because of this feeding strategy, funnel weaving spiders are designed to be incredibly quick and most rarely leave their webs.
Anyone who has been bitten by a brown recluse spider should seek emergency medical attention, according to MedlinePlus, a service of the National Library of Medicine. The black house spider is a robust spider with a dark, charcoal-gray abdomen and white speckles. In addition, the spider has a characteristic velvety blackish-gray body and furry legs. Its large, egg-shaped abdomen and color give it the appearance of a tarantula.
Funnel weavers/ Grass spiders
Although most house spiders are not venomous, the common house spider is easily mistaken for the dangerous brown recluse. Additionally, the furry brown or black jumping spider looks frightening with its hairy body and white spots, but it is generally not harmful. Fishing spiders look very similar to wolf spiders in regards to size and coloration. However, fishing spiders tend to have much longer legs, relative to the rest of their bodies and have alternating brown/black bands on their legs.

Nonetheless, thin legs are a physical trait of wolf spiders in the genus Acantholycosa. The difference between the two groups is the number of tibial spines, or hair like protrusions from the tibia on the first leg. Most Raidosa species measure around one inch in length and share the physical characteristic of having distinct light stripes on a brown body. The picture at the top of the page highlights a chevron pattern on the bottom of the abdomen. Despite the name, the rabid wolf spider (Genus Rabidosa), is not an aggressive, rabies carrying scourge of the earth. In fact, rabid wolf spiders are a fairly common and docile eastern wolf spider genera.
In addition, the six-eyed spider has a distinctive violin pattern on its cephalothorax, making it easy to distinguish from the common house spider. Brown widow spiders measure 0.47” – 0.6” (12 – 16 mm) long, making them slightly smaller than black widows. Like all widow spiders, the brown widow has long, extended legs that are tan with dark brown bands. The black widow spider is easily recognized by its shiny black body with a red hourglass marking. Black widows with red markings have a bulbous abdomen, long glossy black legs, and a small head. Depending on the species, the abdominal marking on the black spider’s underside can be pinkish, orange, or deep red.
They are "mostly nocturnal and often mistaken for tarantulas," Sewlal said. These spiders spend most of their time on the ground, but they can climb trees or other objects if they need to. Their habitats include stream edges, gravel and low vegetation, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. Wolf spiders are a family of mostly large, hairy and athletic arachnids. Rather than catching their prey in webs, wolf spiders chase it down similar to the way a wolf does, although these spiders hunt alone, not in packs. They typically live on the ground, though some are known to climb partly up trees to catch their prey.
Additionally, it's a good idea to keep any pets or young children away from the application site for the recommended time after spraying or applying pesticides. Most species of wolf spider are considered to have stable populations, although the exact populations are not known. Despite this, some of the species located on small islands such as Desertas and Saint Helena are critically endangered, according the IUCN Red List.
Male wolf spiders typically live for one year or less, while females can live for several years. Some adult male wolf spiders of smaller-sized species are known to disperse by air in order to find mates. As with spiders in general, males of almost any species can sometimes be found inside homes and buildings as they wander in search for females during the autumn. Both animals are also quite shy and will run away from you if they spot you. So if you spot a common house spider or a wolf spider in your home, you don’t need to panic, because both of these spiders are not particularly dangerous to humans. A brown recluse spider has a yellowish-brown velvety head and oval abdomen.
Spider bites
It is fairly difficult to eradicate or control wolf spiders entirely from your property, especially considering they must come in direct physical contact with any pesticide to die. Because these spiders are solitary creatures, they generally are spotted alone, and killing off individual spiders can be a tedious and daunting task. "They are also quite easily detected at night due to their eyeshine," Sewlal said. Wolf spiders live almost everywhere in the world, besides the extreme polar region and the Antarctic.
Black and yellow garden spider
While house spiders have venom in their fangs, if you are bitten, the venom of a black house spider is not poisonous, because it is too weak to be dangerous to humans. Wolf spiders are usually brown, gray, black or tan, with dark markings — most commonly stripes, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. Their coloring is effective camouflage, helping them catch their prey and hide from predators. Wolf spiders' size varies, and their body lengths range from about a quarter of an inch (0.6 centimeter) to over an inch (3 cm) long, not including their legs. Typically, these are timid, non-aggressive spiders, often found in dry, littered, undisturbed areas such as closets, woodpiles and under sinks. However, black widow and brown recluse spiders can cause serious harm when accidentally disturbed, as the venom from their bites is quite potent.
Wolf Spider Venom
Let’s compare wolf spiders to house spiders and look at their similarities and differences. You may see wolf spider burrows in your yard, or while walking through a grassy field. Sheds, woodpiles and piles of leaves can also provide attractive habitat for wolf spiders. Wolf spiders are generally large and fast creatures that ambush and chase down their prey rather than build a web to catch them. They belong to a family of spiders called Lycosidae; Lycos means “wolf” in Greek. Orb weaver spiders are a type of outdoor spider that can hide in structures like the patio and decking around your home.

Jumping spiders are often found in and around human structures, especially in barns and sheds. Not only are many jumping spiders brightly colored, but the males put on elaborate songs and dances for the ladies. Jumping spiders are named for their movements which consist of jumps or short, rapid runs. Jumping spiders tend to have a large pair of eyes mounted on the front of a relatively flat-face.
They have bodies measuring one inch long and, counting their legs, can be several inches in length. With few exceptions, it would be easy to confuse a variety of wolf spiders and some of the nursery web spider species. This is especially true in the Eastern United States, where the Nursery Web spiders (including fishing spiders) are most dominant. Well, because their bodies often change appearance to blend in with the environment, the number of brown to gray colored spiders makes for very confusing identification. In some areas, wolf spiders can be a very common pest in the fall when they're seeking shelter from the cooling temperatures, a practice that often drives them indoors. In the home, they may be found around door or window frames, in houseplants, and basements and garages.
While Russell says these spiders “may bite in defense,” it shouldn’t cause any issues for you. “The hobo spider can inflict a painful bite that results in localized red swelling and some pain, but no necrotic lesion,” Potzler says. Usually, symptoms will get better within 24 hours with OTC painkillers and ice. Spiders are beneficial and an important component of the ecosystem.
Nursery web spiders can commonly be found in and around homes, but they pose little to no threat to humans. Their keen eyesight paired with speed allows them to catch prey with amazing accuracy. Jumping spiders do not build webs, but they do use their silk as a tether when they go to pounce on prey. If their aim is off, they can use their silk thread to return to their original location.
The Surprising Cause of Most 'Spider Bites' - Livescience.com
While they can bite, it won’t usually cause an issue for most people, Potzler says.
It will use these hairs to sense its surroundings and get a better sense of its prey, while the common house spider doesn’t have this feature. Female wolf spiders attach their egg sac to their abdomen and carry it around during incubation. Once the hatched “spiderlings” emerge, they climb up onto the mother’s back for several days until they’re old enough to hunt on their own. Although black widow and brown recluse spider bites are rare, care must be taken to properly identify and treat the wound. Healthy adults may only experience mild symptoms but children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems should be extra cautious.

If you have a very large infestation of spiders and cannot control them otherwise, you can apply insecticide to cracks, gaps and other places where spiders may hide. Inside buildings, sac spiders are found in retreats in a variety of places including high up on walls near ceilings. There are two common species in Minnesota, the black and yellow argiope (Argiope aurantia) and the banded argiope (Argiope trifasciata). It builds a loose tangle of cobwebs in secluded and undisturbed areas of the house such as basements and crawl spaces. Cobweb spiders are members of a large group called the comb-footed spiders and are very common both outdoors and indoors. Most spiders are harmless to people and are incapable of biting, even when coaxed.
One might think that the presence of thin legs would be a good field identification clue. Wolf spider identification begins by finding spiders with body patterns similar to the patterns on the spiders presented here. Grass spiders superficially resemble wolf spiders, so if the spider is near a funnel web, the odds are it’s a grass spider. Wolf spiders are not aggressive and will not bite unless frightened or provoked.
In the bush, Badumna insignis is found especially upon rough-barked trees which provide good shelter for their retreats amongst the cracks in the bark. Around houses, Black House Spiders feed upon insects such as moths, beetles and termites which are attracted to the light of windows and lamps at night. The female Black House spider never leaves her web unless forced to and continuously repairs it. Old webs can look grey and woolly from constant additions of silk.
The brown recluse spins disorderly webs and inhabits dark, quiet places in homes, typically where there is cardboard. Black widow spiders tend to lurk in dark places and only attack when threatened. Signs of the venomous black spiders are messy cobwebs consisting of sticky fibers.
While they may be fast and aggressive when hunting their insect prey, they don’t usually bite people unless they are provoked or mishandled. A wolf spider bite may be painful, but it is not generally dangerous to healthy adults. However, sensitive individuals such as children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems may have some form of negative reaction. If you are dealing with wolf spiders on your property, contact your local spider exterminators.
Spotting a spider in your immediate vicinity can be a little intense, especially if you have a major fear of the creepy crawlers. And, when one shows up in your home, it can be downright freaky. And with different species come different levels of concern—which makes learning how to identify the critters important.

For the past 40 years, the war on drugs has resulted in more than 45 million arrests, $1 trillion dollars in government spending, and America’s role as the world’s largest jailer. Yet for all that, drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available than ever. But conservative politicians aren’t the only unexpected allies who have emerged as voices of dissent in the War on Drugs. As The House I Live In so clearly illustrates, the very judges, police officers, and prosecutors employed by this failed system are also speaking out against it. While such long-awaited progress has been promising, it has been too incremental. Mass incarceration, and the Drug War as one of its key catalysts, should be one of top reform priorities of our government, and our society more broadly. We are running out of time to be satisfied merely by piecemeal tweaks to laws and policies, important as those may be, and it is not enough to simply acknowledge that our criminal justice system is out of control. The voices documented by The House I Live In urgently remind us that our reform efforts must be accelerated, the War on Drugs must end, and that it is time for America to engage in nation-building (and nation healing) – right here at home. Jarecki's film makes a shattering case against the War on Drugs, using street footage, prison footage and the closer-to-home story of Nannie Jeter, the Jarecki family's longtime housekeeper, whose own son was arrested. In poor, jobless neighborhoods, selling drugs is often the only "easy" way to make money. And poor, jobless dealers are easy prey for the police, most of whom realistically believe their efforts are making absolutely no difference. It means educating ourselves and our communities about the systemic issues exposed by the war on drugs.

Jarecki brings the viewer into the lives of those affected most by the drug war, from inmates serving long-term sentences for minor drug offenses to distraught family members struggling to understand the system that ensnared their loved ones. This in-depth humanizing view illustrates the often-ignored consequences of the war on drugs, effectively challenging the viewer’s preconceived notions. “The House I Live In” traces the roots of the war on drugs, a term popularized during the presidency of Richard Nixon in 1971. It represents the American government’s campaign to tackle the issue of illicit drugs – their production, distribution, and consumption. However, as the documentary points out, this ‘war’ was less a concentrated assault on the drug issue and more a collection of policies that disproportionately affected marginalized communities.

The location of prisons is often due to the clout of white legislators. More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether. Protest organizers said they aimed to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel’s military since the war began in October. Biden’s motorcade Saturday took an alternate route from the White House to the Washington Hilton than in previous years, largely avoiding the crowds of demonstrators. Criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has spread through American college campuses, with students pitching encampments and withstanding police sweeps in an effort to force their universities to divest from Israel.

Biden’s comments last week underscored the administration’s desire to try and turn the politics of the border — long an albatross for Democrats — into something more advantageous. After former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers tanked the compromise bill, the White House moved to put blame for the crisis at their feet. The president has openly weighed the possibility of taking executive action and, as he did upon signing the foreign aid bill, talked up the need to revisit the legislation. It has been said that the War on Drugs is essentially a price-support system for the drug cartels of Latin America. Although pot and crack use results in mostly black arrests, low-income white areas are showing a dramatic growth in arrests for the manufacture and use of crystal meth. The House I Live In, directed by Eugene Jarecki, is a 2012 documentary film about the War on Drugs in the United States. “The House I Live In” posits a vision for the house we must build—a society that values each of its members, a legal system that prioritizes rehabilitation over punishment, and a community that’s actively engaged in bringing about the necessary change. The documentary encourages viewers to question these legal mechanisms and their real effectiveness in solving the drug problem.

It’s also where many diverse, young professionals and families call home. Not only does this neighborhood provide great restaurants and fun nightlife, but it also has reasonable rent. But in the other America – that of Fox News, far-right podcasts and the Make America Great Again (Maga) base – the trial of the former president over a case involving a hush-money payment to an adult film performer is playing out very differently. He elaborated on the tactic of “catch and kill”, which is when a publication negotiates exclusive rights to stories to prevent their publication, and whether or not Trump was attempting to carry out such a scheme ahead of his 2016 election victory. In a powerful and rousing live address to students at the City University of New York (Cuny) on Friday night, the incarcerated Black political activist Mumia Abu-Jamal praised the pro-Palestinian movement growing at US colleges as being on the right side of history.
It means calling on policymakers to reform draconian drug laws and endorsing programs that prioritize rehabilitation over punishment. It means acknowledging that drug addiction is a public health issue and not merely a criminal justice issue. Through personal anecdotes, statistical analysis, and historical context, we offer a multifaceted perspective on the societal costs of the war on drugs and the urgent need for community action and legislative reform. When everything prevents impoverished minorities from escaping the life, they do end up with no choice but to join the one company their company town provides.

Director Eugene Jarecki’s eye-opening exploration of the subject offers a striking perspective on the societal costs of this conflict and the urgency for community action and involvement. The film leaves us with the indelible truth that the war on drugs is more than just a policy issue—it’s a human issue, one that requires not just reform, but empathy, understanding, and collective action. In this house we live in, everyone has a role to play, and everyone can make a difference. “The House I Live In” serves as a prime example of this type of powerful, socially-conscious cinema.

We meet by-the-books prison security chiefs like Mike Carpenter proudly serving and protecting to the letter of the law while still questioning the whys. And a Lincoln historian helps expose how the War of Drugs is in fact our Holocaust. Because of its disproportionate number of minority targets, the War on Drugs has been called a Silent Holocaust against blacks. The irony is compounded because so many prisons (many of them private, profit-making enterprises) are in lower-income white areas with a ready supply of low-salaried guards.
Kids grow up assuming their life is on the streets with an end either in death or prison. Cops who have watered down what police used to mean through numbers-driven promotions of ignorant brutes rather than intellectual students of criminal justice and capitalists reaping the rewards of big business jails and their need for new toys don’t help. I’m a huge proponent for personal responsibility and a man’s ability to choose a better life, but even I have to agree there’s much more than at play with the issue of drugs. If someone like me can admit that, Jarecki has definitely done something right.
Downtown LA is full of amazing landmarks, including the breathtaking Bradbury Building, which was built in 1893, and the iconic Angels Flight Railway in the Bunker Hill district, and the historic El Pueblo de Los Angeles. However, over the years, gentrification has brought new development and businesses to the area, revitalizing this once-avoided area of DTLA. The annual event presents a great opportunity for comedians, and also a veritable minefield. Because every president except for Trump has attended the White House Correspondents Association event since it launched early last century, there is heightened sensitivity about decorum.
Some comedians, such as Stephen Colbert, Michelle Wolf and Larry Wilmore, have tripped those sensibilities. In what is perhaps the most significant student movement since the anti-Vietnam campus protests of the late 1960s, the conflict between pro-Palestinian students and university administrators has revealed an entire subset of conflicts. Student protests on US university campuses over Israel’s war on Gaza showed little sign of letting up over the weekend, with protesters vowing to continue until their demands for US educational bodies to disentangle from companies profiting from the conflict are met. But, in reality, there’s been no behind-the-scenes jockeying from the White House to restart talks, in part because the White House believes that the migration crisis has temporarily stabilized, with illegal border crossings dipping again in March to 137,000. When the House gets back to work today, may find out whether Marjorie Taylor Greene’s push to remove Mike Johnson as speaker has any momentum.

Named for a Paul Robeson song, The House I Live In culls together a series of intimate vignettes depicting the men and women caught within the stifling system behind America’s War on Drugs. Jarecki can throw statistics at us all day about the number of non-violent drug offenders incarcerated alongside rapists and murderers, but actually seeing them will always hit hardest. No politician dares risk seeming soft on drugs, although the Obama administration did bring an end to sentences for crack (used more by blacks) that were sharply more extreme than powder cocaine (used more by whites).

When I wrote, "young offender," did you have a mental image of a black youth? Yes, 90 percent of those arrested for using crack are black, although only 13 percent of the nation's crack users are black. Could it be that black men dealing crack on street corners are easy pickings for police patrols, but white offenders in affluent suburbs and Wall Street financial firms are not so easy to nab? The sad thing is that white crack users use poor blacks to run the risks for them. This narrative style allows us to see the faces behind the statistics, putting a human touch on a deeply systemic issue.
TikTok condemned the bill as an unconstitutional attack against the hugely popular service. We have the option to deliver right to your door or you can conveniently pick up your food at our restaurant. One wrote that Dennis “looks as handsome as ever”, adding that the actor exudes a “mature charm”.
Midsummer Is Full of Love
Given that TikTok is one of the largest and most popular social media platforms in the world, its value would put it out of reach for all but the largest tech companies. National security officials in Washington have feared that the Chinese government could use TikTok to promote propaganda aimed at interfering in U.S. elections, or surveil some of the 170 million Americans who use the app every month. That means TikTok being forced to sell, or face a possible ban, is on the fast-track to becoming law. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks.
House bill aimed at Chinese biotechs is advancing
Congress passed the measure citing national security concerns because of TikTok’s Chinese ties. Both lawmakers and security experts have said there are risks that the Chinese government could lean on ByteDance for access to sensitive data belonging to its 170 million U.S. users or to spread propaganda. Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a range of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the First Amendment.

Complications arise as Ji-eun and Young-jae become attracted to each other. The issue could take months or even years to settle, during which the app would probably continue to function for U.S. consumers. Today, we learn there are some serious safety concerns around an experimental blood cancer drug from MorphoSys that has been the centerpiece of Novartis’ plan to acquire the company for $3 billion.
And during the Trump administration's campaign against TikTok, China added content-recommendation algorithms to its export-control list, meaning selling the technology would require the blessing of the Chinese government. Under the bill just passed by the House, TikTok would be given up to a year to find a company, or group of investors, to acquire it. That extends the timeline from the six-month window the app was given in the original bill the House passed last month, which some Senators said was too short. A bill that would force a sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner, ByteDance — or ban it outright — was passed by the Senate on Tuesday and signed into law Wednesday by President Biden.

TikTok sparks user revolt in US over sale plan - BBC
In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Donald Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights. His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed legislation Saturday that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year, but don’t expect the app to go away anytime soon. Legislation that could ban TikTok if its China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake has won a major boost as House Republicans included it in a package of bills that would send U.S. aid to Ukraine and Israel. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades. Lawmakers had failed to act despite efforts to protect children online, safeguard users’ privacy and make companies more liable for content posted on their platforms, among other measures. But the TikTok ban reflects widespread concerns from lawmakers about China.
California Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat, voted against the legislation. He said he thinks there could have been less restrictive ways to go after the company that wouldn’t result in a total ban or threaten free speech. Organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union have backed the app. “Congress cannot take away the rights of over 170 million Americans who use TikTok to express themselves, engage in political advocacy, and access information from around the world,” said Jenna Leventoff, a lawyer for the group.
